Snow globes make excellent Christmas decorations at home. They also make fun gift ideas for kids, friends and loved-ones. While there is several snow globes sold in the market, it is always fun to create your own. By following the four easy steps below, you can make your own winter snow land!
1. Gather necessary equipment. A nice glass jar is the first item on your list. You don't have to buy a new glass jar. Instead, look for used food jars at home. You can use baby food jars, pimento jars, pickle jars depending on the size of the dome that you want to create.
Second are the ornaments. These ornaments will create the scenery inside your snow dome. You can choose from the items you already have at home. But, you can also buy from a craft store. Lastly, you will need glue, paint, raised platform, small confetti or glitters and mineral oil and other decorative items.
2. Perform a Trial Run
After gathering the necessary materials, you have to check whether or not these items will not be ruined when mixed with water, especially the ornaments or figurines. In some cases, the paint of the figurines will dissolve in water, creating a murky snow globe. Try to immerse the items in water and check for presence of discoloration.
Also, inspect the glass for presence of cracks or broken fragments. In addition, check for possible signs of leakage. With the lid closed tightly, shake the jar filled with water and turn it upside down for a few minutes. Check if the water will seep down from the lid. If it does, then you might need another glass jar to create your snow dome.
3. Assemble the Ornaments
Once sure that the jar will not leak, you can now start assembling the ornaments as you desire on the inverted lid. But, use a plastic base to elevate the items so that they can be easily seen. Use your imagination and unleash your creativity. You can even design the figurines and the jar itself with Christmas effects.
Allot some space at the side of the lid to make sure it fits in the jar. If you are satisfied with the setting, glue the items in place. You can also use glue stick to create a pile of snow at the base of the ornaments. Paint it with white and stick some glitters.
4. Fill the Jar
The next step in making snow globes is to fill the jar with a liquid medium, preferably mineral oil as it allows the glitters to drift longer in the dome. Then, add a certain amount of large glitters since small glitters tend to float. You can also add small pieces of confetti to add variety.
Snow globes are never boring. If you are interested in extra features, you can enjoy a variety of them. Some snow globes feature finish up music, LED light-weight interiors, automatic snow earth interior blowers and a few even do a full rotation. Not many snow domes have these features nevertheless, but it is fun to discover one with this kind of add-on feature.
Like most classics and antiques, it is a must to have a professional check it before buying. There are a lot of knock-offs out there. If you are not careful, you might end up paying more for a product that is not really worth much. This is a common rookie mistake.
