We wanted to buy these last year, and got on the waitlist. We ordered three, and they arrived timely and well. Highly recommended. These are part hand-painted (the top third), and part decoupage (applied thin lithographed material) on the bottom third. The hand painting covers the seam well. This is very reasonable combination of printing and painting for a $20 set of dolls, and I am well satisfied. It is a 150 year old production technique used on fine Scottish Mauchline decorative antique treenware, so it's a good tradition. When they arrive, you will find the largest doll almost impossible to open. Don't dispair! Twisting won't work! A gentle rocking while applying slight force to open will gradually enlarge the crack. When the crack is about 1/32 of an inch, less than 1mm, it will open. When successfully opened the first time, a fine grit sandpaper on the INSIDE UNPAINTED surface, just a few strokes (DON'T SAND TOO MUCH!) will allow it to open more easily in the future, and still have that satisfying popping sound. These are the only nesting dolls on the market that I've found in two years of searching, that have really Bible scripture, this from the Gospel of Luke, for the birth of Christ Jesus! We ordered 20 for all the babies in our church fellowship that we know!
