The first nativity scene was created in 1223 by St. Francis of Assisi. The word nativity came from the Latin "nativus", which means "arise by birth". It depicts the story of the birth of Jesus. The scene takes place in a manger where the infant Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were visited by the shepherds and the Magi. The star of Bethlehem, barn animals and the crib made of hay were always part of the nativity scene.
