Tips for Trimming Your Christmas Tree
Tips for Trimming Your Christmas Tree

Ever since German settlers decorated the first Christmas trees in 19th century American homes, the tradition of trimming the tree has become a symbol of the season. Before losing yourself in aisles of lights, Christmas ornaments and tinsel, it is a good idea to plan how you want to decorate your Christmas tree.

Trimming the Tree

Adding decorations one step at a time prevents tangled strands and broken ornaments. Following this order in reverse is also a simple way to un-decorate at the end of the holiday season:

  1. Lights: Rest strands within the boughs, halfway between the tip and stem of branches.
  2. Beads or Tinsel: Drape loosely around the tree, starting from the top.
  3. Ornaments: Place large Christmas ornaments on thick branches near the bottom of the tree and fragile ones near the top.

If you are creating a classic Christmas tree aesthetic, we recommend using white lights. This mimics the tradition of placing candles in the tree. Use silver beads, ornaments with a red and gold color scheme and an angel or star tree topper to complete the look. Use multi-colored lights and colorful ornaments for a tree that reflects your personality.
