The earliest Christmas ornaments took form in fruits, mostly apples, and nuts, in the 1800s. They are used to decorate evergreen fir trees to celebrate the winter festivals. The concept of using food as ornaments were also adapted in cutting gingerbread and other hard cookies to shape as angels, bells, fruits, and even stars and hearts. The star, in Christmas ornaments, would symbolize the star of Bethlehem as a herald and guide during the birth of Jesus. The heart shape is a worldwide symbol for warmth, affection, and love.
