Snow globes have been enchanting generations of children of all ages since 1900. It has captivated many spectators through its scenic display of snow gradually descending on a figurine. The invention of this novelty item was so brilliant, and surprisingly it was also born out from serendipity. Austrian surgical instruments mechanic, Erwin Perzy I, was trying to find a way to improve the luminescence of the newly-invented electric light bulb. He noticed that the shoemakers filled glass globes with water and placed them in front of the candle flame to create more light for their shop.
So Perzy started tinkering and placed the ground glass in the water to intensify the reflected light, but then it quickly sank. He looked for other materials for his experiment and surprisingly arrived at his mother’s kitchen and found semolina, a coarse, white powder used for baby food. He sprinkled semolina flakes and it floated very slowly to the base of the globe. It did not enhance the light as he expected but rather, it reminded him of snowfall. This became his inspiration to create a winter scene inside a glass globe.
He mounted a miniature diorama of a church on the base of the water-filled globe, and so creating the first snow globe. After the Second World War, his son, Erwin Perzy II took over the family business and introduced a new line of snow globes, added with famous Christmas figures and character such as Christmas trees, Father Christmas and snowmen figurines More and more globes immersed innovatively in the market.
